The Rebel Series
is a mixture of romance and adventure. Each book, set
in the late 1700s, is a love story with mystery and intrigue as a young
couple and their rebel friends strive to help their country. For those who
enjoy strong women characters, all three books have this in common. They are
independent women who have an opinion and are not afraid to express it. The
heroes in this series are rebels with a sense of justice. They are chivalrous and
their feelings run deep for the women they’re in love with. Young and old alike
can enjoy the romance in this series.

In Flora's guest post, Meet a Hero, she reveals her unusual writing habit is that her characters come to life for her and that leads to interesting situations. Check out this one:

Sometimes I talk about the characters in my books as if they were real. I never knew how real, until the day my husband, Dan and I went to the local (VFW) Veterans of Foreign Wars post.

As a reporter/photographer team for Senior Life newspaper in Brevard County, Florida, we were gathering information for a story about Memorial Day events. I couldn't resist telling the VFW members about Jack Martin, a fellow veteran. Jack exists, for me, in the pages of my book. He is one of the four central characters I brought to life.

Others include Liz, an accomplished artist and Carlos, Jack's brother, an international linguist and Presidential aide. There is also Rosa. Don't let her pretty face and small size fool you. She's an expert markswoman. She is also Jack's love interest, as Liz is Carlos'.

The guys at the VFW listened as I rambled on about Jack. Enlisting in the United States Army after high school, he served fifteen years and had risen to the rank of Master Sergeant. Now a civilian in his mid-thirties, he had served several tours of duty in Middle East hot spots. That's where the vehicle he was driving with fellow service members struck an IED. (Improvised Explosive Device) As the senior enlisted man and trained in first aid, Jack tended to the others' wounds. Securing a tourniquet around what was left of a young soldier's leg, he saved his life. In the aftermath of a suicide bombing, Jack had also comforted a 20 year-old soldier who bled out in his arms. But Jack had been in kill or be killed situations and he had prevailed.

Rosa is just tough enough for Jack, but tender enough too. She holds him when he awakens from nightmares about his troops being ambushed and blood on his hands.

In addition to being a tall, handsome much-decorated veteran, Jack is a motorcycle enthusiast, a hardworking bartender and the fiercely protective father of a teenage daughter. He can fix or build just about anything.

"We want to meet him," the VFW members told me. "Tell him to come here. We'll help him with his (PTSD) Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. We understand."

My eyes widened in surprise. Without intending to do so, I had convinced them Jack was real.

But in a sense, he is. More than in my story, we can see him in the faces of 540,000+ veterans whom Wounded Warrior Homes said have been diagnosed with PTSD.

"Post Traumatic Stress Disorder can be described as a mental health condition that's triggered by a trauma, whether experiencing or seeing it. The symptoms include flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, depression and confusion," the organization states on their website.

The soldiers at the VFW wanted to meet Jack and I hope you will too—and the other characters as well, in the pages of Love's Sweetest Revenge.

The Amazon reviewer is petting a tiger in his profile picture, so it seems like a good idea to listen to what he says. That is amazing!

Review: Zo is one of the many inspiring historical fiction works by Canadian author Murray Pura.
The two poems: “My destiny” by Taras Shevchenko and “The Moon” by poet Andrii Chornavka set the tone for the entire book.

The story is set in the year 1911. The protagonist, Andrew Chornavka, is a monk. Interestingly, the author first introduces him as “Zoya’s brother.” Although the book is entirely written through Andrew Chornavka’s point of view, the book is about his sister Zoya.

The book starts off in the United States of America as Andrew Chornavka is being questioned in a monastery by an officer. The animosity that Andrew Chornavka feels, during that enquiry, is unmistakable. The officer asks Andrew Chornavka a number of questions about his sister Zoya and the readers are taken on an adventure down memory lane. This book is unlike any usual historical fiction. With descriptive scenes and strong characters, it successfully holds the reader’s attention until the end.

The book moves at a fast pace and every chapter leaves the reader wanting more. Strong characters and interesting plots leave the reader wanting more. The characters also show interesting contradictions. A good example is Andrew Chornavka’s character. Despite being a monk, he is described as someone who is “easily provoked to violence, sarcastic and spiteful.” Zoya’s character sketch is also equally captivating. Every chapter, without fail, excites and piques the curiosity and attention of the readers.

What I loved most about this book was author Murray Pura’s writing style. It is very elegant and expressive, almost poetic. His words linger with you even after you have turned the page. Murray Pura tastefully and gracefully describes a tumultuous time not only in Zoya and Andrew Chornavka’s life but also for the rest of the world. With eloquent linguistics, the author accurately sets the tone and articulately recounts events and emotion.

Most of the time, a good book comes down to three significant components - 1) a gripping plot, 2) Strong characters and 3) meaningful relationships between the characters. ‘Zo’ has an abundance of all these three components. This is one of those books that you won’t want to put down until you finish it. It is a book that makes you feel, and the feeling stays with you even after you finish reading it. You feel love when there is love and loss where there is loss and this feeling is guaranteed to resonate within you.

If you love historical fiction and stories about the Second World War period, this one story that you will get swept up into. ‘Zo’ by Murray Pura is the book for you. The relationships and plots are compelling; the storytelling is smooth and enlightening. ‘Zo’ will make you want to stay up late or stay in on a Saturday night just to read “one more chapter”. After reading ‘Zo’, I am definitely intrigued and interested to read other works by Murray Pura. ‘Zo’ is truly a great read and I promise you won’t regret it!

During the past several months, I have experienced quite a few health problems. I didn’t feel like sitting at my computer to work on my next book. Instead, every time a thought popped in my mind about a character or a plot, I would write it on a sticky note and place it in a basket. While sitting in a doctor’s office, the hospital, or just resting I continued this pattern. I made sure I always carried a little notebook with me at all times to jot down any thoughts that might enter my mind.

When I felt better I went to the basket and pulled out the notes. I was surprised when I saw I had hundreds of pieces of paper filled with words. I took each note out and decided where it would fit best in my book. Then I placed each one in folders labeled as Chapter 1, Chapter 2 and etc… When I was able to start working on my book, I got the folder that said Chapter 1 and placed each sticky note on my easel. Right before my eyes was a complete chapter, and all I had to do was connect them all together. It was like putting a puzzle together, piece by piece. The words seemed to flow and before I knew it, I had finished.

This is how my new book, “The Problem with Pearls” was written. Yes, to some of my author friends this sounded very strange, but it worked for me. It was so much fun I have decided to do my next book in just this same way. As a matter of fact, I have my basket sitting right beside my desk just waiting for me to get started on book number ten.

Yet even at the secluded monastery in America the past finds him. A delegation from the Vatican arrives with questions about his youngest sister, Zoya, who is, to Andrew’s shock, a candidate for sainthood. Reluctant, hostile, wanting only to be left alone to his dairy herd and gardens and prayers, Andrew eventually begins to talk.

The talk takes him where he does not wish to go, makes alive again what he had hoped was dead and buried, and makes real what had long ago been lost. He knows what he has to tell is no more than a story about a family that tried to stay together, and keep love strong, when everything on earth tried to rip that love apart. Yet he also knows the archbishop wants a story about an angel who walked with God.

We all need rejuvenation at some point in our lives, something that will rekindle the thrill and passion we once had, and awaken us from our stupor, something that will set us on the right course again. Renaissance by Mark Miller is a collection of short stories about various characters living ordinary lives. Their lives at first seem to be just like any others until something happens that initiates the change they have been hoping to achieve. In one of the stories, Richard Thatcher remembers with nostalgia when things were easy; when all he cared about was playing in the mud with his friends who have now moved on with their lives. Looking back, he realizes how much life has changed. Everything seems to be a dazed rush. No stopping even for a breath of air. Pressure continues to mount on him. “Not anymore,” he finally decides, and walks out.

The four stories contained in Renaissance by Mark Miller are all unique in their own way, but still drive the same theme. Each story inspired reawakening within me. It is easy to carry on through life and forget who we are or what we really want. As I read the book, I was reminded of what really matters and what my priorities should be. The Forgotten Well specifically reminded me of the blessing of life’s simplicity and how not to get bogged down by unnecessary complications. The stories contain an honest and inspiring outlook on life and will be a great read for anyone seeking inspiration."

Set Free is an Amish Christian fiction by George Michael Loughmueller. Allan Howarth is discontented with his job, the bills, and feels like a stranger with his wife, Tina, and their teenage kids. After receiving a letter from a former teacher, Allan travels to the Amish town of Karsten Fields. He meets Ben Abrim, caretaker for a house that Allan inherited. Allan’s plans don’t include living without electricity and other necessities, but he hears a voice urging him to stay. He uproots his family, and they are naturally upset by their sudden lifestyle changes. Although not welcomed by everyone, the family attempts to adjust to their restricted situation. Their patience is fully tested by Allan’s illness, strict Amish rules, the lack of Internet and entertainment. Being isolated from the modern world lets each family member evaluate their lives and make drastic decisions they never thought possible.

Sometimes we need a retreat like Karsten Fields to get away from our stressful schedules and dependence on modern gadgets. The Howarth family had a culture shock when they moved into the deeply religious Amish town, where things are done the old-fashioned way. I have a deeper appreciation for the Amish religion. Some of their laws and teachings promote strong family values, non-violence and learning to respect others’ beliefs. The author was very thorough and detailed in his writing, which was never dull. He brought out every natural emotion and thought that the main characters had, thus enabling me to understand their actions and choices. Set Free is a touching spiritual story by George Michael Loughmueller."

If you haven't seen it yet, turn away now because there will be spoilers.

That's the first burning question: will we have an anthology story for Snoke? Who is he? Where did he come from? Does it even matter?

Before I go any further, I will say I loved The Last Jedi. I will also say that this post may be a bit self-serving. I have read and watched so many negative reviews about this movie. I saw an article about a petition to have it removed from canon. If we don't like something, let's whine about it and erase it from history? Does that work in pop culture as well as it does in politics?

The #notmyluke movement is what finally drove me to write this. I realize my opinion is no more or less valid than anyone else's, if you even read this.

Mark Hamill stated in an interview that his Luke Skywalker would never do the things that happened in the latest movie. He would never give up. He added at the end, that this wasn't his movie and a new generation of characters essentially needed to come into their own while he stepped aside. However, our sound-byte world will only latch on to the first part.

But that's what this Star Wars was about: giving up and failure. It was about how we deal with and overcome that failure. My generation grew up with Star Wars. We had idealistic heroes for an idealistic time. Things are not so hopeful these days (or are we blissfully nostalgic?). I, for one, think that many my age have become Last Jedi Luke. We are (or maybe it's just me) closed off from the force. We have forgotten the old ways and lost our hope. Something needs to happen to bring back that connection. This version of Luke realizes that and he comes back, if only to make his final and most important stand.

First they killed Han Solo and now Luke. They are killing our childhood. No. If it lives in our hearts and memories, can it really be killed? Everyone dies. Luke died. Yoda died. I'm going to die some day. That's not depressing. It's life. The death of Luke Skywalker somehow makes Star Wars more real and maybe that's why so many didn't like it? Who likes being confronted with their own mortality?

What else did they not like? Too many jokes? It's a kid's movie. Star Wars was always for kids. Part of the problem is that the kids have grown up. Maybe it's a little more aimed at kids these days, but it is owned by Disney now. While Marvel may take Disney further and further away from its core values, maybe Star Wars can bring some of those back.

Where were the light sabre battles? This movie was more about the Force than any of the other two movies combined. One of the worst things, in my opinion, that happened to Star Wars was Yoda holding a light sabre. As a Jedi Master for over 800 years, he should have been so far beyond the need for a physical weapon. His few moments in Last Jedi showed some of his true power. Frank Oz and his puppet stole the show for me. And Luke's final moments, expressing himself through the Force, were brilliant. Notice how different he looked from the version of himself on the island? He brought forth the best version of himself, an ideal that he had long since abandoned. I hate how I look in selfies. I wonder what the best version of my self would look like?

Eh, not too bad...

And for those that had a problem with Finn and Rose, are there no romantics left? Rose just lost her sister and she spends her time alone in the underbelly of the ship. Then she is suddenly thrust into an adventure with one of her heroes. Of course she's going to fall for him. We should be happy for something simple and good among all the death and destruction.

I think the last thing I want to comment on is Poe. It is my contention that every story is incomplete without a character arc, a defining change. While Poe's arc was maybe a little obvious, it was solid and necessary. Did he spend a lot of time looking out windows or was he actually looking at a window into his soul? If he had been constantly caught up in the action, he would not have had the time to discover himself.

In summary, The Last Jedi is one of my favorites of the Saga. While I was disappointed that they did not bump into Lando on Canto Bight, I was as equally surprised at how I felt seeing Leia floating in space. The revelation, or lack, of Rey's parents didn't even bother me. They do have to save something for Ep IX. I do apologize if I rambled a bit, I did warn that this would be a little self-serving. I posted some specific thoughts and I would love to hear in the comments if anyone agrees or disagrees with any of my points.
In Murray Pura's poetry collection, Petals: Poems of a War in Ukraine, you are immersed in a part of life that many people in this world are not privy to. War. This collection pulls together snapshots of childhood memories and the recalling of war, and the heartbreak of both at times. It will break you out of your comfort zone, that is a fact. It will open your eyes to a war of which many of us have no inkling. You will be faced with that war, and with recollections of childhoods that may or may not be similar to your own.

Murray Pura's first poem draws you in, giving you a sense of a history that might not be known, but it makes you traipse through the unknown in a way that is captivating. There is a heartbeat in these poems that rhyme could not produce, it pulls you in with poetic words. My favorite poem, “she traced my body on paper”, entranced me. I can picture it in some ways and can’t in others, it’s a back and forth kind of unsettling emotion that I find to be perfect. If there were any confusion to be had, the poem “the man from Paris” again is a favorite; however, its structure made it difficult for me to read easily, and there were times when I didn’t know who was speaking. Other than that, Petals: Poems of a War in Ukraine by Murray Pura is one of the best collections of poetry that I have come across in some time. I highly recommend it."

A little about Flora: She is an award winning journalist from New York. She currently lives in Florida where she continues to contribute articles with her husband/photographer. Where Your Heart Meets God's is a devotional filled with a lot of research and spiritual exploration, not to mention, plenty of pearls and nuggets.

MW: Let's start off with a personal question. Considering your devotional is an examination of Christian beliefs, are you a life-long Christian? And how have your beliefs changed throughout your life?

FR: <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">I grew up in a loving but unbelieving family.
However, I always sensed someone I could not see, watching over me and
whispering my name. Only after encountering evil during teenage drug use, then
suffering a mental breakdown as a young wife and mom, did I recognize the one
calling my name as Jesus. I turned to Him and began a journey of healing and
communion with God.
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">MW: That is a strong testimony. Not something to take lightly and I'm sure you've had a lot of help along your journey. I imagine you've had a lot of influences, but who, specifically, has influenced your writing?
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">FR: <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">I have been greatly inspired by masters of
English literature such as Charlotte and Emily Bronte, authors of Jane Eyre and
Wuthering Heights. The subdued Victorian passion so beautifully captured in
their work taught me that intimacy is best expressed through subtle mood and
setting, rather than vivid description. John Bunyan, author of the great
Christian classic The Pilgrim's Progress, helped awaken my heart to that "world to come." In his
literary masterpiece The Chronicles of Narnia, C.S. Lewis taught me
the importance of child-like faith. Then there is the mad genius of Edgar Allan
Poe and the perfect cadence in his poem, The Raven.
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">MW: Lewis and Poe are a couple of my favorites, too. Of course, Lewis is well-known for his academic writing beyond his fiction. <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Are you a fan of his popular fiction or more of
his non-fiction?
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">FR: <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Albert Einstein has said that "imagination
is more important than knowledge." In The Chronicles of Narnia, C.S. Lewis exemplifies this, utilizing imagination to tell salvation's story,
as well as that of alternate realms and universes. I much prefer Lewis'
fiction. It stokes the fires of my imagination.
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">MW: A couple of your chapters discuss Lewis. You also explore the concept of sehnsucht. <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Where is your sehnsucht on this
plane of existence?
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">FR: <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;">For me, sehnsucht is a place, event
or moment that captures something of heaven. On my plane of existence, this is
best illustrated by the secure Victorian home where my mother and I lived with
my grandparents and aunt while my father was overseas with the military. I can
still hear a fire crackling in the fireplace and feel its welcoming warmth on a
cold winter's day. The aroma of soup cooking on the stove, still drifts into my
memory, as does the pine fragrance of the Christmas tree my grandfather would
set up beside the grand stairway. The love of my dear family members surrounded
me like a wall. Except for my mother, that wall is now gone and our home has
fallen into ruin. However, I anticipate a family that death can never claim and
a home that will be forever beautiful, in the Father's house where there
"are many mansions" (John 14:2).

MW: Selah. That is quite a transportive illustration. If your fiction is anything like the description above, your readers will be very happy with you. I suppose everyone has their own version of sehnsucht. The last question I have for you is about the pearls and nuggets throughout your book. What is the difference between a Pearl to Ponder and a Love Nugget?

FR: <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 7pt; font-stretch: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; line-height: normal;"> <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt; text-indent: -0.25in;">A
Pearl To Ponder is a question related to each devotion in Where Your
Heart Meets God's. It helps the reader search their heart about what God is
saying and how it might be applied to their life. A Love Nugget is a reassuring
truth for the reader to personalize.
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt; text-indent: -0.25in;">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt; text-indent: -0.25in;">MW: That's great. There is so much to take away from you book. The anecdotes from your own life make it easy for the reader to make a personal connection. Thank you so much for taking your time to visit with us.
Murray is a talented writer in any genre, but we at MillerWords are excited to see him back amongst the plain folk. This is a touching story about making choices and finding where you are supposed to be in this world.

About the book: She wanted to be Amish more than anything else. Kirsten found herself in a unique position. She stood on the precipice of another world. She watched that world of peace and simplicity from the edge of her hectic life. Kirsten worked at Zook’s Amish Diner in the day and she helped the Schrock family with their wheelchair-bound son Malachi each evening. In her mind, she was Amish. The Bishop did not agree and he questioned her intentions, as well as her past. Kirsten was once engaged to a soldier who died on deployment. She came from a military family and she was currently seeing another soldier named Brandon. The Bishop could not allow her in their church. Things become more complicated when Kirsten meets Joshua, the Amish blacksmith. Does choosing between Brandon and Joshua mean giving up her dreams of becoming Amish? What does tomorrow hold for Kirsten?
Interesting places they have explored in pursuit of a story include a “castle,” the Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine, Florida. In Titusville Florida’s historic Vassar B. Carlton Courthouse, they climbed a hidden stairway to a long-abandoned jail. While covering events at a local ranch, Flora narrowly avoided being trampled by a “spooked” horse. She has also been a staff writer for Warner Press, contributing to their Pathways to God devotional and Christian Art Bulletin. In addition, she has written for Guideposts Magazine, Decision Magazine, the Upper Room Daily Devotional and more. She and Dan are proud parents and grandparents.

“Our lives have been filled with adventure,” Flora says.

He is a best-seller and has won multiple awards. With Petals, Murray took a chance on a different kind of writing. Petals is a collection of poems that tend to be quite personal and more than a little emotional. Murray took a chance outside of his norm and it paid off in the form of a 5-star review.

Here is the complete article by reviewer and poet Jim Bennett:

twenty-five powerful poems

five stars

I will give you a quote from the introduction, which is in prose, to provide a first feel for Pura’s descriptive power: “Aunt Helen would bring me intricately decorated eggs at Easter. Whenever I visited her home it was like visiting a foreign country – icons with dark eyes brooded on the walls, pickles and dill floated like pike among lake weed in huge glass jars, pictures of the Pope blessing a crowd and of Jesus opening his chest to a Sacred Heart mingled with a photograph of her father, my grandfather and namesake, lying in his coffin, hands clasped on his chest.”

You will be ambushed by the poem Cottonwoods, which begins thus: “if there are cottonwoods in Ukraine /they will tell different stories //mine speak of the buffalo and the Blackfoot /jade waters wind about their roots /and have their own words...” which leads to a surprise gut-punch ending.

Belonging and alienation are weirdly captured in She Traced my Body on Paper, which begins thus: “She traced my body on paper /And ignored the chill I felt on my skin /As she moved her pencil down my neck /Over my shoulders and down past my heart //Over the pattern of my life...”

I have too many favourites here to mention them all, so I’ll skip to The Girl at the Airport, which is sort-of a love poem told amidst the horror of war, including these fragments: “i met Savella where /smoke wound like the black dreams you cannot remember /but which are snaked too tight to leave your mind...” and later “we fought for the airport by Donetsk /where she held an assault rifle /and it was the shattering and breaking of men...” and “I saw the liquid around her eyes /and the current beneath her skin...” and “killing became kisses /wounds gave way to passions /she had no english /it made no difference...” Now if you think that’s a spoiler, turn to the poem and let Pura tell you the rest of it. You will be surprised.

No carps in this review. No typos. Nothing but powerful imagery and strong experiences.

I will conclude by mentioning War House, which begins thus: “I have seen houses /Where the only things moving /Were shirts and pants pinned to a clothesline /Flipping up and over in a blue sky wind...” Here the tragedy of being caught in a war is described with brutal simplicity.

For me, star counts are hard. I try to be consistent. My personal guidelines, when doing an ‘official’ KBR review, are as follows: five stars means, roughly equal to best in genre. Rarely given. Four stars means, extremely good. Three stars means, definitely recommendable. I am a tough reviewer. This time, five stars was an easy decision. Enjoy. Pura stands among the great writers of descriptive experience.

Kindle Book Review Team member.

(Note: this reviewer received a free copy of this book for an independent review. He is not associated with the author or Amazon.)

About the Book: This is the story of a war. But it is also a story of human love and beauty and faith that the sun will rise again over a nation torn by terrible conflict. If a novel is like live streaming or Netflix, then poetry is a gallery of HD images taken with your iPhone or Nikon DSLR, each picture sharp and crystalline and rich with color and meaning, etched in your mind forever thanks to its precision and brilliance. This is a small book of such high definition images, vivid snaps of one man's journey through the recent military conflict in Ukraine. People's faces are here, fields of flowers are here, impossibly blue skies and sharp suns, roads and streets and windows that remain perfectly intact even though the rest of the house has been blown to pieces. Love is here, and peace sits in the same room as pain, while hope has more strength than killing or death. The man's words are beautiful and true and, as real as the war he fights is, dawn and tomorrow are more real. Parts of it will tell your story. Parts of it will become your story. Parts of it will take you on a journey you never expected to take. That is the power of poetry in motion. Begin at this man's beginning.

About the Reviewer: Jim Bennett is a poet: five volumes available here; and published in The Fiddlehead, Event, The New Quarterly, and Prairie Fire. Jim started writing poetry in high school, thought a handwritten poem had been created by a student who’d sat in the same desk earlier that day. Mentored by one English teacher, and rekindled by Richard Ketchum, Jim never looked back. Jim Bennett is an unlikely poet: M.Sc. in Pure Mathematics, programmer, designer, and application architect at IBM, CIBC, and SimVest Solutions, you’d expect a techie’s techy and be correct. Still, Jim has varied interests and views his career(s) as funding for himself, his wife, their children, and writing. (Poets rarely get rich by their poems; Jim suspected this and directed his efforts accordingly). Jim takes pictures; images on jim-bennett.ca are his, and cover images on his last three volumes. He keeps tropical fish, but is not expert. Jim Bennett is a poet. Everything else is secondary, except his wife and children.

MW: The Beggar's Miracle tells the story of an orphan named Bitty Brown. Often, an author identifies with or connects with their main character. What does Bitty Brown mean to you?

JRD: Ah, Bitty Brown. I am a student of Irish history. During one of my rounds of study, I came across an article about a trial in Ireland (2013) in which the proprietors of a state-run orphanage were charged with abuse. I delved into the subject and discovered many accounts orphans who were sold to Americans. From there, I did more research into the daily activities of the "Laundries" as they became known (owing to the laundry they took in from citizens, most of which contained piles of bills to pay for getting a child). Because many families wanted infants, many of the children sold to Americans were the products of sexual abuse of the young women (16 and older) who remained in the Laundries. Bitty Brown represents all of the children who were mistreated and abused at the Laundries. The study of the laundries touched my heart so deeply that I knew I had to write about it. The name Bitty Brown came to me while I showered, and I knew at that moment that she would be the girl who would tell the story of the Laundries.

MW: So, it is quite a personal story. With the story set in Ireland, your connection goes a little deeper. Your writing shows that you've been to the Emerald Isle, you must love it. How many times have you been?

JRD: I've been to Ireland four times. During my first trip there, I worked as a travel writer for Tourism Ireland for six months. I traveled across the country finding exciting places and writing about them. Along the way, I forged friendships with many people in Ireland. That was in 2003. I've been back three times, and I'm sure I'll go again. Ireland calls to me, and I feel as if my heart's home is there. I have a dream of living there one of these days.

MW: That could be a real possibility! Writers tend to live on dreams, so we wish you the best in fulfilling yours. Now to switch gears from dreams to nightmares, it seems that the "laundries" had truly horrible conditions. Does anything like that still exist in Ireland today?

JRD: The Laundries still operate today in Ireland. However, they are called Children's Homes, and only the oldest of the orphans can be assigned work duties. Strict governmental guidelines and regular inspections keep the homes running according to the law, but somehow, I believe that the practice of selling infants to foreign couples still flourishes, though I have no proof or evidence to support the belief.

MW: That sounds like the subject of a new book. I can already see Liam Neeson in the movie adaptation. He does have a particular set of skills. While you may not have Mr. Neeson in your book, you do have an element of the paranormal. How important is the paranormal in a Christian-themed story?

JRD: Virtually everything I write contains an aspect of the paranormal. Perhaps it is my attempt to have readers think beyond the worldly. With Bitty Brown, the beggar Jude and his dog are both paranormal entities without whom Bitty might not have survived her life on the streets. I've always had a strong belief in angels and spirits. An event from my childhood began this belief and has lasted my lifetime. I don't expect people to change their beliefs when they read one of my stories. I simply expect them to form a bond with the angel characters, to expand their imaginations and entertain possibilities. Without some form of paranormal aspect, my stories couldn't be told because at the heart of each one is the thought that angels exist. My hashtag on Twitter is #angelwriter. And that's what I want to be. I want to stir people with my quirky view of angels and their interactions with human beings.

MW: We have angels and orphans. That feels like an emotional story that could touch readers. As the author, why do you want people to read this story?

JRD: The greatest appeal of the story, to me, is that it offers hope to all who feel oppressed. It is a heart-warming story that affirms the idea that any one of us can become victims of circumstance, but we can all be rescued from those circumstances and given a new start. Bitty represents everyone who faces struggles and hardship. When two strangers approach her, she shies away at first. But those strangers offer her nothing but love. They provide a safe place for her, they give her a family, and they show her how to love in return. Hope, redemption, and the possibility of greatness come to Bitty Brown just as they can come to her readers.

MW: In the end, it is about hope. We can always use more of that. Thank you, Joy, for visiting with us today! The Beggar's Miracle is available now for ONLY $1.99.

Read the beginning of the story here:

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">Bitty
Brown hid behind a stone pillar across the way from several large trash bins on
High Street in Dungarran, bare feet tucked under a tattered dress she’d been
given by the Sisters of Mercy Orphanage. She covered her head from the misting
rain with a piece of canvas she’d taken from the orphanage’s laundry room. One small rough hand gripped a worn bag she’d
pilfered from one of the other girls. Inside this bag, she kept a treasure, a
secret treasure she’d had since she was only four years old.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">As
darkness descended upon the small town, Bitty stood and looked down High Street
to the right, then to the left. The shop keepers had turned off the lights,
locked the doors, and left for home, and just as she’d hoped, the streets were
now deserted as they were every Wednesday evening at six when people gathered
for services at the Dungarran Church of Ireland.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">Bitty
had visited the church only two nights ago when Ireland’s cold winds cut
through her like daggers. She’d thought she might freeze to death outside under
her cardboard, and not wanting at that moment to die, she sought refuge in the
church. Fearing that she would be thrown out, she hid behind the last row of pews.
She sighed as she sat down, treasure in hand, on the thick rug. It felt so much
better on her bare feet than the icy streets. She’d been warm there.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">She
decided that night to become a proper Christian someday.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">But
then, the pastor came ‘round, a tall, good-looking young man wearing a black
robe.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">Bitty
closed her eyes, curled herself into a tight ball, and waited for him to walk
past. She heard his footsteps coming nearer, an odd sound, as if one foot fell
a little lighter than the other.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">Her
heart pounded.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">Then
the footsteps stopped briefly.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">Bitty
did not open her eyes for fear the pastor would be standing beside her. He’d
then toss her out, back on the streets.

<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">She
sighed quietly as she heard him walk past and into the small rectory office.
When she heard the door close, she opened her blue eyes.

in front of her was a woman’s shawl. She hadn’t seen it when she’d first come
in, but now, the thick fringed wool, unattended, proved too much to resist. Bitty
picked it up carefully and wrapped it around her shoulders. She was small for
her age, terribly undersized, even now at nineteen, so the shawl covered her
from her shoulders to her feet. She rubbed her cold hands along the soft wool,
hugged the shawl tightly over her and let her head fall back. She closed her
eyes and tried to remember when she’d ever been this warm. Nothing came to
mind, so she made a sign of the cross in thanks, slid under the pew, and fell
fast asleep.

Ms. Davis brings this previously released story to MillerWords in a brand new format with a touching new cover design.

About the book: Ice seemed to cover everything in Ireland from Dublin to Dungarran. It was a bad time to be homeless and a worse time to be an orphan.

Bitty Brown was both.

Bitty left the warmth of the Sisters of Mercy, deciding a life on the streets would be better than working seven days a week in the laundry, getting spots out of the clergy’s robes. Now she spent her nights huddled under a cardboard box, hoping to find her next meal in the nearby garbage cans. The kindness of Pastor Percy afforded her an old shawl to cover her shoulders.

She felt lost and alone with barely a memory of the comfort of her mother’s arms. Then she met Mr. Jones, a scruffy dog accompanied by an unusual beggar. Bitty sensed something strange about the beggar, something that could change her life.

Every night, she prayed for miracles. Could this be the miracle that would save Bitty Brown’s life?

heroism, savagery, things amazing and miraculous were all part of this world,
and the world of Chornavka’s brothers and sisters. Armies clashed and battles
raged in the skies and on the ground. Yet the wars of the heart were no less
fiery and painful, and the hunt to find hope and meaning within nations ripped
apart by conflict, just as desperate as the struggle to survive. America,
Canada, Ukraine, Russia, Poland, Germany and Berlin are the backdrop to a
powerful drama of the human soul, to a story of a love that proved impossible
to stop, a war that proved impossible to win and a faith that proved impossible

goal as an author is to entertain, inspire and enlighten his readers. With Beautiful Skin, he accomplishes that,
Beautiful Skin is a novel set in the WWII era. The back cover explains it best: Once upon a time there was a war and Andrew Chornavka and his family were caught up in its fires. Love, betrayal, sacrifice, heroism, savagery, things amazing and miraculous - it was all part of his world, and the world of his brothers and sisters, as armies clashed and battles raged in the skies and on the ground. Yet the wars of the heart were no less fiery and painful, and the hunt to find hope and meaning within nations ripped apart by conflict, just as desperate as the struggle to survive. America, Canada, Ukraine, Russia, Poland, Germany and Berlin are the backdrop to a powerful drama of the human soul, to a story of a love that proved impossible to stop, a war that proved impossible to win and a faith that proved impossible to break.

The companion piece is a personal collection of poems called Petals.

This is the story of a war.

Both books will be available in paperback and eBook in time for Christmas. Beautiful Skin is already garnering advance reviews calling it: riveting, heartbreaking and fascinating.

Please follow MillerWords on Facebook for all of our upcoming releases.

Mark Millerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07110107563550638325noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8366307062531258353.post-17761318021264555832016-11-06T12:44:00.000-08:002016-11-06T12:44:45.260-08:00Cover Reveal - Set Free
